A Carbis Bay Holiday Guide to the St Ives Art World
Since before the early colonies, St Ives has always been a place that has captured artists’ imagination worldwide. As early as the mid-eighteenth century, landscapes of this beautiful place we call home have been created to remind the artists of what a wonderful and picturesque place St Ives is. Here we have our Carbis Bay Cornwall Art Galleries guide.
Due to this history in the arts, St Ives has evolved into a hotspot of famous and amateur artists and art lovers. The galleries we are about to introduce you too, some more well known than others, have a habit of showcasing some of the most diverse and beautiful ranges of artwork that locals and visitors have to offer.
Established in 1999, this long-standing gallery has been part of the St Ives art movement for over twenty years. It boasts itself as the only gallery in the town to specialise in highly-collectable artworks by major Post War Modern St Ives and British Artists. They have a sublime selection of art both in the gallery and online that would make the Porthminster Gallery one of our top choices for a visit.
The Waterside Gallery, situated in St Ives’ heart, prides itself in its down to earth and approachable vibe. Showcasing Cornwall’s finest contemporary artists, it lends itself to the scenic town’s wonderful offerings. This stunning gallery isn’t just about paintings, but also covers ceramics and sculpture too.
Being founded by St Ives favourite, Barbara Hepworth in 1949, the Penwith gallery has not one but three main gallery areas. It is one of the most fabulous spaces and a constant in modern art evolution. The gallery is also the home of the Penwith Society of Arts in Cornwall.
Janet Leach, a potter by trade, created this wonderful gallery in 1960. Representing over one hundred different artists, this gallery space has become a household name among the locals for its beautifully curated exhibitions and artwork. Situated on the St Ives main high street, we recommend you pop your head in when you can to take in the lavish works of such incredible creators.
Close to the picturesque St Ives Harbour, the Crypt is one of the lesser-known galleries that are exhibition based. A diverse crowd of Cornish artists often hires this large open space. You can find works in many different mediums, and with no gallery restrictions, the art you find there can range from highly modern, to a more classic style of painting. It is always worth a visit, as you never know what magic you will find.
With such a variety of art on show, you soon realise why St Ives has become one of the United Kingdoms leaders in art. You won’t find many places with such a vast selection of artwork and exhibitions, housed in beautiful historic buildings and with a backdrop of the most inspirational views you can imagine.
The Cornwall art galleries mentioned above are merely the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this great town’s offerings.
